Idaho Digital Drivers License
2024

The Problem
Traditional driver’s licenses weren’t designed for the digital world. While digital IDs are emerging, many simply replicate physical cards without considering the unique advantages of mobile devices. This results in clunky interfaces, security concerns, and missed opportunities for better user experiences. How can Idaho’s digital driver’s license be more intuitive, secure, and functional while maintaining a strong connection to state identity?
Process
1. Research & Competitive Analysis
I began by exploring digital driver’s licenses like Apple Wallet and Delaware’s implementation, as well as physical licenses to understand layout, information hierarchy, and state branding. Initially, I chose Alaska, analyzing its symbology and how it could translate into a digital format.
2. Wireframing & Early Prototyping
I created wireframes to map out key interactions and layouts but quickly moved into high-fidelity prototypes. This early experimentation helped shape the structure, though my progress slowed as I reconsidered my approach.
3. Pivot & Final Execution
With fresh perspective and a tighter timeline, I shifted to Idaho, designing a unique state-branded logo and refining the UI in just three days. I rapidly iterated on layout, interactions, and functionality, ensuring the final prototype was visually cohesive, intuitive, and functional.
This experience reinforced the importance of adaptability and rapid iteration—balancing thoughtful design with efficient decision-making under pressure.
Reflection
This project challenged me to make decisive design choices under pressure, resulting in a clear, intuitive digital driver’s license for Idaho. Despite the time constraints, I successfully integrated state branding, strong typography, and a structured layout to enhance usability.
